Nonprofit making Mental Health Care more accessible in Alabama

Bridging the Gap to Accessible Mental Health Care

We believe everyone deserves access to quality mental health care. Mindful Roots partners with therapists and donors to fund counseling scholarships to make therapy affordable for individuals and families in need throughout North Alabama.

In Alabama, there’s roughly one mental health provider for every 800 people. Many go without help due to cost, lack of insurance, stigma, or limited access in rural areas. For those struggling, that gap can mean the difference between hope and despair.

The Gap in Mental Health Access

our mission:

Helping Healing Take Root

Our organization will raise funds to be dispersed through counseling scholarships to clients with identified financial barriers to accessing mental health services. We will create corporate sponsorships, secure grants, and accept private donations.

Jasmine Hall, LMFTA

This non profit could change the lives of so many individuals, couples, and families, around us by making it possible to attend a session, or several, without any financial restraints. I am excited to provide services through this partnership with Mindful Roots, because I wholeheartedly support their mission and believe that the impact this organization will have on our community, will change the lives of many. If we can impact just one individual, imagine how changing their life can also change the lives of those around them.

Kathren York, lpc

I am excited to partner with Mindful Roots because I believe everyone should have access to therapy regardless of their life circumstances. Clients benefit from therapy most when they have access to a variety of practitioners and therapy modalities. Community supports like Mindful Roots can help give clients greater access to a variety of services and increase clients' ability to achieve their goals in therapy.

Lia hooper, lmfta

I am excited about the opportunity to partner with Mindful Roots because their mission aligns with my own desire as a therapist - to help people access healing, stability, and hope no matter their financial circumstances. So many people in our community are carrying heavy mental and emotional burdens but lack the resources to get the support they need. Mindful Roots is removing those barriers. It is an honor to be part of that work!

Our story

Rooted in Compassion and Community

Mindful Roots founder, Rachel Sullivan, has worked in mental health care for over 10 years. Her work has included a focus on reducing the social stigma and improving access to care. Across this time she has seen how the common issues that play a role in people struggling to access mental health care have continued to get worse. This recognized exacerbation of accessibility is what prompted her to find a way to stand in that gap. “I answer the majority of the phone calls that come into my practice on any given week. As time has passed it's become harder to hear yet more consistently frequent for people to say things like ‘We can't afford that’, ‘I don't have insurance’, ‘We tried that place but we had a bad experience’ or ‘We really need someone who specializes in____’”. Rachel shares “While I have done a great job at building a team of amazing clinicians, as well as a referral list of clinicians who show up and serve people the same way we do,

Our founder

In early 2023 God placed an idea on my heart... one that slowly began to take shape and was a direct answer to the gap in mental health care. In 2024 I knew that it was time to start breathing life into the project. I talked to friends who had championed my work so far, and people that I knew would believe in the dream with me. These conversations served to shape the foundational components of what later became Mindful Roots. I could not be more honored to see this take off. I know that our local community will be supportive of what we're doing,

I have witnessed the profound impact that mental health challenges can have on individuals and families—and how often financial barriers prevent them from getting the care they need. Joining this board is my way of turning that awareness into action. I want to help ensure that everyone in our community has access to compassionate, quality mental health care, regardless of their financial situation. For me, healing, hope, and resilience are not luxuries—but essentials—for everyone

I chose to join the board because I know firsthand how life-changing accessible counseling can be. During a season when I didn’t have the income to afford traditional therapy, I was able to receive counseling that met me where I was, both emotionally and financially. That support made a profound impact on my life, and it’s the reason I’m passionate about helping others access the same kind of care. By serving on this board, I hope to contribute to a mission that ensures no one is denied support simply because of their financial situation.

Accessibility to mental health services is of great personal importance to me and I am so happy to help others gain access to make their lives better.

Donations, Scholarships & How It Works

Nonprofit Mental Health Assistance FAQs

1. How do you ensure donated funds go directly to client care and not just to a clinician’s practice?

Great question (and a fair one). All scholarship funds are paid directly to licensed providers for verified counseling sessions, not as general income. Clinicians must document each session provided through the scholarship to ensure funds are used exactly as intended.

2. Who qualifies for counseling scholarships?

Individuals, couples, and families experiencing financial barriers to mental health care can apply. Eligibility is based on income, proof of residence, and personal need. We work directly with providers to confirm applications and ensure funds support those who truly need them.

3. Do you only serve people in Alabama?

Yes, for now. Mindful Roots currently serves individuals and families across Alabama, with a focus on communities that have limited access to affordable mental health care. As funding grows, we hope to expand our reach.

4. How can therapists or counseling centers partner with Mindful Roots?

Providers can apply to become approved partners. Once accepted, they can offer reduced-cost sessions to qualifying clients, and Mindful Roots supplements the remaining cost through scholarship funds. This allows providers to serve more people without financial strain.

5. Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes. Mindful Roots is a registered nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law, and contributors will receive a receipt for their records.

6. Is my information safe?

YES! All partnered therapists and clinics will be required to show proof of a HIPAA electronic health record (EHR) system, and all communication required for verifying sessions meets HIPAA standards. Your PHI is safe and only accessible to the clinician you chose to work with.
